Success Story: Nancy Martinez
Patients Services Coordinator II, MGH Senior Health
Workforce Development Program Participation: Partners in Career and Workforce Development
Where is Nancy Today?
Nancy, who is a Patients Services Coordinator II at the MGH Senior Health practice, previously worked for four years at the MGH Chelsea HealthCare Center. In October 2008, while living in a shelter with her young son, Nancy was referred to the Partners in Career and Workforce Development (PCWD) program.
Nancy’s Workforce Development Path
Nancy was so happy when she was accepted into the rigorous PCWD program, which is a free, full-time, eight-week training program designed for individuals in Partners local communities who are interested in entry-level employment within one of Partners hospitals. The training program includes four weeks of classroom instruction and a four-week internship in a basic clerical or support staff position.
What has Nancy Gained from this Program?
“The PCWD program has helped me so much in my professional and personal life,” said Nancy. “I gained so many skills that enabled me to get hired at MGH Chelsea right after I completed the program. In addition, my job has enabled me to provide food, clothing and programs for my 13-year old son, Alex. I am so thankful to the PCWD team for their ongoing support. They have become a part of my life and a part of my family.”
Nancy is very proud to be a positive role model for her son, whom she describes as her everyday hero. She is also proud of completing the PCWD program and working at MGH because she is now able to offer a better future for her son and for herself. Another accomplishment that gives Nancy great pride is receiving at 2013 individual Partners in Excellence Award for quality treatment and service at MGH. “Thanks to PCWD and my colleagues at MGH, I have become a professional employee and a better human being,” she said.
Nancy’s Future Educational Plans
Currently, Nancy is very happy working with her wonderful elderly patients at MGH Senior Health. She always wanted to work with the elderly because of the many needs and challenges that come with getting older. In the near future, Nancy plans to go back to school and get her degree in Management. She would also like to grow in the medical field, and she knows that she will have lots of opportunities within MGH.
