Success Story: Maritza Rosa
Medical Records Analyst, Health Information Services, Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital
Program Participation: Boston Mayor’s Summer Jobs Program
Where is Maritza Today?
Maritza Rosa, who is a Medical Records Analyst at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, first came to work at the hospital through the Boston Mayor’s Summer Jobs Program in 2008 before her senior year at Parkway Academy of Technology and Health (PATH) in West Roxbury. She worked with many people in BWFH’s Health Information Services department to learn about their roles and offer assistance.
Maritza's Workforce Development Path
Maritza, who heard about the Mayor’s Summer Jobs Program from her guidance counselor at school, was very proud when she was informed that she was as one of the six students selected to work at BWFH that summer. She was also grateful to be invited back to participate in the program after her senior year in 2009. This work experience really paid off for Maritza. Because of her work ethic, attention to detail and all the other skills she exhibited during the summer jobs, Maritza was hired into a full-time position in Health Information Services in October 2009.
What has Maritza Gained from this Program?
"It was really fun and interesting learning about everyone’s job functions," said Maritza. “I was taught how to file charts, make new patient charts and assemble inpatient and outpatient charts. Because of that experience and the fact that I am a very fast learner, I have become really good at multi-tasking, and today I can perform the functions of my co-workers if they are absent.”
Maritza's Future Educational and Career Plans
Maritza plans to continue her education and hopes to take advantage of the workforce development programs at Partners HealthCare and through BWFH. She wants to go back to school and study health information technology and become a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).
