Dr. Smoller is the Director of the Psychiatric Genetics Program in Mood and Anxiety Disorders. He is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health. He is Assistant Vice Chair of the MGH Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Smoller is co-Director of the Genetics and Genomics Unit of the MGH Clinical Research Program. He is also Director of the Harvard Catalyst Translational Genetics and Bioinformatics Consortium and a Senior Scientist at the Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research at the Broad Institute. Dr. Smoller is a graduate of Harvard College, Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health (ScD, Epidemiology). He completed his residency in psychiatry at McLean Hospital and then trained as a fellow and postdoctoral fellow in the NIMH Training Program in Psychiatric Genetics.
Dr. Smoller's research is focused on the identification of genetic determinants of psychiatric disorders. Dr. Smoller also has a strong interest in phenotype definition and has been investigating the genetic relationships among mood disorders, anxiety disorders and schizophrenia. A related series of studies have focused on the genetic basis of temperament profiles that may be intermediate phenotypes for anxiety disorders, mood disorders and ADHD. Dr. Smoller and colleagues are also examining pharmacogenetic predictors of response to antidepressant and anti-anxiety medications.
